Ajax Reading Circle
Begins September 19th; Main Branch Rotary Room
Youth ages 4 - 12 are invited to read with high school volunteers on Saturday mornings from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. in the Main Branch Rotary Room. The program is free.  The Reading Circle runs until December 12 and then breaks for the holidays, returning on January 9. Home School Library Club
Every Other Friday Beginning January 8; 1:00p.m.-3:00p.m.; McLean Branch

Home schooled children, age 10 and under, and their parents are invited to get together to explore books, resources and parent led activities at the McLean Branch Library.

The program is free and run on a drop-in basis. Call Cindy at 905-683-4000, ext. 8902 for more information. 

 
Le Club Français

Ontario Early Years

The following group experiences for parents/caregivers and their babies are being offered by the local Ontario Early Years Centre staff at Ajax Library Services' Main Branch.

Registration begins February 22nd for March Programs, March 22nd for the April Programs.  Please call 905-683-4000 x8830 to register.

Mother Goose logoParent - Child Mother Goose Program (0-12 months)
Session 2: April 1 to June 10 (no class April 29th) - Registraion Begins March 22.

Based on the oral tradition of story telling, we will focus on learning songs, rhymes and stories.  Each session includes time for teaching and time for visiting with other participants and teachers.  Session runs Thursdays from 1:00-2:30 p.m.


Bouncing Babies LogoBouncing Babies (0-12 months)
Session 1: March 3, 10, 24, 31 - Registration Starts February 22nd.
Session 2: April 7 to 28 - Registration begins March 22nd.

This program introduces infants to songs, nursery rhymes and musical instruments. Learn how to incorporate music and musical instruments into baby's everyday play experiences. The program runs Wednesdays from 1:30 - 2:30 p.m. or 3:00 - 4:00 p.m. in the Main Branch Program Room.


Music and Movement LogoMusic and Movement (0-6 years)
Session 1: March 5, 12 - Registration Full.
Session 2: April 9 - 30 - Registration begins March 22.

Introduce toddlers to songs, nursery rhymes, and musical  instruments. Sessions run Wednesdays from 10:15 - 11:15 a.m. in the Main Branch Program Room.

Read with Me LogoRead with Me @ your library® is a four-part program designed to give you the tools you need to raise your child in a literacy-rich environment. Introduce yourself and your baby to the world of children's literature. Gain an understanding of your child's language development stages. Create a homemade book to treasure. Session runs Wednesdays from  10:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.  Space is limited to 12 adults and their babies.

March Break: Seize your Seuss! Green Eggs and Ham Storytime
March 15 - 17; All Branches

Green Eggs and Ham“They are so good, so good, you see!”  Sam loves green eggs and ham! Do you? Explore some Seuss nonsense and create your own green eggs and ham placemat.  Children age three and up and their caregivers are invited to share in some Seuss nonsense and fun at storytime! Free. Drop-in. Space limited by room capacity. For ages 3 and up.

Main Branch: Mon., March 15 at 6:45 p.m. and Wed., March 17 at 10:30 a.m.

Read with Eyes Shut“Young cat, if you keep your eyes open enough, oh, the stuff you would learn! The most wonderful stuff!  A fun-filled magic show that combines magic, storytelling and puppetry with lots of audience participation. Space is limited to 100. Registration is now full.

Ran the Circus“The Circus McGurkus! The World’s Greatest Show on the face of the earth, or wherever you go!”
 If you ran the circus, what would you do? Would you make the lions wear a blue shoe? Would you watch the panda bear chew bamboo? Or would you hand over the reins to Cindy Loo Who? Come join us as Dr. Seuss' book we read, play games that will test your speed, and make a circus pop-up craft that you really, really need!  Free. Drop-in. Space limited by room capacity. For ages 6 - 12.

What could be more fun than making up deliciously wacky recipes inspired by Dr. Seuss? Join Margaret from That Chocolate Shoppe By The Lake for a creative cooking class. Note this class will be nut-free. Registration is full. For ages 6 - 12.

CAP Computer Training: One-on-One
Main Branch Tuesdays February 2 - March 30 12:00 - 6:00 pm

CAP TrainingA CAP (Community Access Program) youth intern will be available for one-on-one training on computer basics, applications (Excel, PowerPoint, Word), email, Internet basics, online services (online banking, online government sites) and resume creation. To register for this free program, speak to Community Branch or Information staff on your next visit, phone your local branch or email staff at libraryinfo@townofajax.com.

This program is provided in partnership with Durham Region Employment Network (DREN) through funding by the Government of Canada.

Book Clubs

New members are always welcome to join the Library's book clubs.  For more information, please call 905-683-4000 x8811.  All Book Clubs are held at the Main Branch.

Book Chat meets Wednesdays at 7:00 p.m. in the Main Branch Rotary Room.  The book for the April 7th meeting is The Lady and the Unicorn by Tracy Chevalier.
Tea & Books meets on Wednesdays at 1:30 p.m. in the Main Branch Rotary Room.  The book for the April 14th meeting is The Dive from Clausen’s Pier by Ann Packer.

Tax Clinic - Main Branch
March 12 - May 1

Tax Clinic 2010Volunteers trained by the Canada Customs and Revenue Agency can help you complete your income tax and benefit return.  The program is for individuals with low income and simple tax situations that are unable to complete their income tax and benefit return by themselves and unable to pay for assistance.

In order to be eligible, the following are maximum income levels that qualify:

  • Single person:  up to $25,000
  • Couple:  up to $35,000
  • One adult with child:  up to $30,000
  • Each additional dependent:  $2,000
  • Interest income less than:  $1,000

Volunteers do NOT assist in the preparation of returns for deceased persons, bankrupt or self-employed individuals, returns reporting capital gains or rental income, or returns claiming employment expenses.

Required income slips (where applicable) include:  T4 (employment earnings), T4A (pension income), T4OAS (old age pension), T4CPP (Canadian Pension Plan), T5007 (social assistance, WCB), T4RSP (RRSP income), T4RRIF (registered retirement income fund), T5 (investment slip), and T3 (investment slip).

Required deduction information (where applicable) includes:  RRSP contributions, child care receipts, safety deposit box receipt, medical receipts, charitable donation receipts, rent receipts and property tax receipts.

Clinics will be offered starting March 12 at the Main Branch on Tuesdays from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. and Fridays and Saturdays from 10:00 a.m.  -2:00 p.m.   To register for the program call 905-683-4000, ext. 8813 during regular library hours.
