Roller shoes a cause for concern in Town facilities

The latest fad grabbing the attention of youngsters and adults alike are Roller Shoes otherwise known as ‘Heelys’. In an attempt to avoid injury, the Town of Ajax Recreation Services is prohibiting the use of all types of roller shoes in their community centres and recreational facilities. Town staff will be asking those seen improperly using these shoes to remove the wheel(s), change shoes or leave the premises immediately.

Roller shoes are athletic footwear that have one or more wheels inserted into the sole, normally at the heel, that allows the rider immediate transition from walking and running to rolling by a simple alteration of their stance. The wheels are high performance in nature and not intended for indoor use. Several school boards already prohibit the use of roller shoes on their property, as do some shopping malls and public buildings. The Town of Ajax Recreation Services are following suit, prohibiting the use of roller shoes in such facilities as the Ajax Community Centre, McLean Community Centre, St. Andrews Community Centre, Village Arena and Rotary Park Pavilion.

Parents and riders should be advised that according to the Canada Safety Council (CSC) Web site, roller shoes "can pose a danger not only to the users but also to bystanders". It goes on to state that some of the recorded injuries associated with falls while using roller shoes include broken arms, legs and possible head injuries.

Town staff thank residents in advance for helping them to promote a safe and fun environment in all recreation facilities.
