Research Databases
The Library invests in subscription databases which provide reliable and up to date information. Your library card is your key to access most databases.
Pickering-Ajax Digital Archive - The Pickering-Ajax Digital Archive (PADA) project is a digital archive and research database containing detailed information about the unique history of the Pickering and Ajax communities. An Ajax Public Library card is required to use these databases:
Alt HealthWatch - Provides in-depth coverage across the full spectrum of health-related subject areas. MasterFILE Premier - Provides full text for more than 2,100 general reference publications. Covering virtually every subject area MasterFILE Premier also includes nearly 650 full text reference books, 84,074 biographies, 86,135 primary source documents, and an image collection of 107,135 photos, maps and flags. Health Source: Consumer Edition - This database provides information on many health topics including the medical sciences, food sciences and nutrition, childcare, sports medicine and general health. Primary Search - Provides full text for more than 60 popular magazines for elementary school research. All full text articles included in the database are assigned a reading level indicator. Funk & Wagnalls New World Encyclopaedia - This database provides over 25,000 encyclopaedic entries covering a variety of subject areas. EBSCO Animals - Provides in-depth information on a variety of topics relating to animals, including a description of the nature and habitat of familiar animals. Electric Library Canada - A full text database with magazines, books, newspapers, pictures, maps, and television and radio transcripts. Electric Library Elementary - A research database designed to assist kids in grades 3 - 6 with their homework assignments. NetLibrary - Thousands of electronic book titles in a variety of subject areas, including computer application manuals and "how to" books, personal and consumer health, business, education, cooking, hobbies, sports, family and popular psychology and literary criticism. NoveList - An online readers' advisory service that helps you discover new fiction books and authors.
CPI.Q - Find articles from a comprehensive list of Canadian and international journals and magazines, all with a Canadian focus. Expanded Academic ASAP - Articles from scholarly journals, news magazines, and newspapers on topics from arts and humanities to social sciences, science and technology. Gale Virtual Reference Library - A database of encyclopaedias and specialized reference sources. General Reference Center Gold - A general interest database of articles from magazines, reference books, and newspapers, many with full text and images. Health & Wellness Resource Center - Provides instant access to carefully compiled and trusted medical reference materials. Health Reference Center Academic - Multi-source database provides access to the full text of nursing and allied health journals, plus the wide variety of personal health information sources in InfoTrac's award-winning Health Reference Centre. Literature Resource Center - Provides access to biographies, bibliographies, and critical analysis of authors from every age and literary discipline. What Do I Read Next? - Includes over 117,000 recommended titles, more than 60,900 plot summaries, and awards information from 562 literary awards, all to help users uncover new reading adventures, find long-remembered favourites, and discover award-winning titles.
