Research Databases

The Library subscribes to many research databases which you mayfind helpful.  These databases contain reliable, published information not found on websites.  Your library card is your key to access most databases.

Academic OneFile
Peer-reviewed journals and reference sources on the physical sciences, technology, medicine, social sciences, the arts, theology, literature and other subjects.  Full-text coverage of the New York Times back to 1995 is included.
Alt HealthWatch
In-depth coverage is provided on complementary and alternative medicine.  International, and often peer-reviewed journals and reports, as well as hundreds of pamphlets, booklets, special reports, original research and book excerpts are available.
 
Ancestry *(in-library use only)*
For genealogical and historical research; includes census, military, court, vital, church, land and probate records; directories, passenger lists and more for Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom and some European countries.
Auto Repair Reference Center
Car repair information, including drawings, step-by-step photographs and wiring diagrams are available for easy viewing and printing.

Biography Resource Center + Marquis Who's Who
Biography Resource Center integrated with Marquis Who's Who® provides quick reference information on over 1 million additional people whose entries have appeared in more than 22 Marquis sources published from 1985 to the present.

Biography Resource Center: African Americans
More than 30,000 biographies from respected sources such as Contemporary Black Biography, Notable Black American Men, Notable Black American Scientists, and Who's Who among African Americans; with articles from nearly 300 magazines including American History, Essence, Jet, and U.S. News & World Report.

Information about current events, business, education, science and medicine, arts, law, academia, and lifestyles -- all with a Canadian focus.
Canadian Points of View Reference Centre
Better understand controversial subjects in Canada through the presentation of multiple sides of key issues; including the environment, health, human rights, crime, race, substance abuse, technology and many more.  Guides to debate, developing arguments and writing position papers on controversial issues are also included.

Leading Canadian and international periodicals, reference books and biographies as well as an image collection of photos, maps and flags.
Career Cruising
An excellent career guidance and planning tool for all ages!  Examine job profiles that include job descriptions, working conditions, salary, educational requirements, career paths and related careers; complete an assessment that suggests career options based on your answers to questions; and view a comprehensive listing of (U.S. and Canadian) post-secondary schools and programs, including information on apprenticeships.  A portfolio component is also available, where users can save information, build career and education plans and create a resume.
Communications and Mass Media Collection
Current information from journals on all aspects of the communications field, including advertising and public relations, literature and writing, linguistics, and many more.
Computer Database
Find computer-related product introductions, news and reviews in areas such as hardware, software, electronics, engineering, communications and the application of technology.
CPI.Q (Canadian Periodicals)
Canadian and international journals, magazines, selected sections of the Globe and Mail, Canadian biographies, and other reference content all with a Canadian focus.

Culinary Arts Collection
Includes 150 of the major cooking and nutrition magazines with thousands of searchable recipes, restaurant reviews, and industry information.

Criminal Justice Collection
Whether studying to become a lawyer or law enforcement officer, paralegal, or for a career in Homeland Security, this collection of 150 journals rises to the challenge.
Custom Newspapers
An online collection of current, full-text newspapers with local, regional, national and global coverage.
Discovering Collection
Covering the core curriculum areas (including history, literature, science, social studies, and more), this database provides a selection of reference, primary sources, creative works, and multimedia, including hours of video and audio clips.
EBSCO Animals
Provides in-depth information on a variety of topics relating to animals, including a description of the nature and habitat of familiar animals.
Educator's Reference Complete
A collection of academic journals, reports and many premier reference sources focusing on educational principles, child development and psychology, and best practices in education.  The majority of the full-text titles included are also found in the ERIC database.

Electric Library Canada
A full-text database with magazines, books, newspapers, pictures, maps, and television and radio transcripts.

Electric Library Elementary
Homework help by reading level for students in grades 3 – 6.  Children can search for information from newspapers, magazines, books, maps, pictures, audio/video clips or transcripts.  Topics can also be explored by subject (Arts & Crafts, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, etc.) or type of reference source (dictionary, thesaurus, encyclopedia, almanac, atlas, specialized source).
 
Environmental Studies and Policy Collection
Provides multiple viewpoints on environmental issues and policy, including perspectives from the scientific community, governmental policy makers, as well as corporate interests.

Eureka.CC
Covering the 1980's to the present, this database contains selected full-text of well-known Canadian francophone news resources. The resources are updated daily and the collection includes national and international newspapers, news wires, audio capsules and radio/television transcripts. They include:

Especially for elementary/middle school students, Kids Search automatically searches across 3 databases at once (Primary Search, Funk & Wagnalls New World Encyclopedia, American Heritage Children's Dictionary).  Searches can be done by topic, subtopic, keyword and much, much more!  As well, some database results have a reading grade level indicator assigned.
