Ajax Transportation Master Plan Update

Ajax illustrationThe Town of Ajax has experienced rapid growth in recent years. With a current population of approximately 90,000, the Town is anticipated to grow to over 120,000 by 2021, and up to 155,000 by 2031.

Ajax is confronted with the challenge of increasing east-west commuter traffic on is major corridors – Taunton Road, Rossland Road, Kingston Road (Highway 2), Highway 401, and Bayly Street. Since much of the traffic originating from east of Ajax and destined to locations west of the Town, the resulting congestion on east-west roads continues to add pressure on collector and local roads within the Town, increasing concerns of local residents over traffic infiltration, traffic impacts, and safety.

Need for Update

In 2000, the Town approved its first Transportation Master Plan (TMP) to address the transportation requirements up to 2021, which coincides with the build-out of the Town within its urban boundary. With recent legislative changes to growth, regional policy changes and recent development activity within the Town, an Update of the TMP is required.

Since the preparation of the 2000 Master Transportation Study, many key assumptions have changed and new information is available:

Provincial planning initiatives provide the broad planning context for the transportation master plan – Growth Plan for the Greater Golden Horseshoe and legislation such as the Greenbelt Act 2005 and Places to Grow Act.

The 2003 Durham Region Transportation Master Plan which adopts a vision of a balanced road and transit infrastructure investment strategy will provide an overall regional transportation context for Ajax’s transportation master plan.

With the amalgamation of local transit systems into Durham Region Transit, transit usage assumptions will be revisited to reflect the changes arising from regional and provincial transit initiatives and will be reflected in the TMP travel forecasts.

The Transportation Master Plan Update is intended to meet the goals and objectives of the Town’s vision for improving its Transportation System and promoting mobility for all its residents and employers. The study will recommend a sustainable, multi-modal Transportation System for Ajax, which will accommodate future population and employment growth to the year 2031.

This study is being carried out in accordance with the approved process for Phases 1 and 2 of the Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (June 2000). Soliciting public input is critical to the success of this study. The Town would like to ensure that anyone with an interest in this study has the opportunity to get involved and provide input. Over the course of the study, two Public Open Houses will be held to present findings and receive public input.
