Youth Engagement Committee
On November 12, 2007, Ajax Council approved the establishment of a Youth Engagement Committee (YEC). The aim of the committee is to increase the skills and leadership capacity of Ajax youth and provide them with opportunities for growth and civic engagement.
Why is the YEC important to the Town of Ajax? A nation-wide study revealed that one of biggest concerns for youth is that
their voices are not heard, respected or taken seriously by adults. This committee will formally and consistently engage youth in corporate initiatives. The opinion of youth is extremely valuable to the Town.
Who can join this committee? The committee is open to youth, aged 13 to 22, living in Ajax, and will be comprised of up to 12 members. Representatives will reflect a cross-section of ages, as well as cultural and socio-economic demographics.
When will the committee start, and how often will the meetings be held? The committee is set to start in January 2008. There will be a flexible meeting schedule as determined by the youth members, and the agendas will be informal. The membership term will expire annually.
What are the incentives to join the YEC? For youth in highschool, an excellent incentive is that they can earn community service hours which they need to complete to graduate. Other valuable incentives include an opportunity for youth to increase leadership skills, as well as an opportunity for growth and civic engagement. Involvement in the YEC is an impressive addition to a resume, and an excellent opportunity to meet new people.
How will the YEC contribute to the Town of Ajax? There are a number of specific events and initiatives that the YEC will be involved in. These include developing events to celebrate Youth Week in May 2008, reviewing Town programs and recreational opportunities, providing feedback on major corporate initiatives, including the Community Safety Strategy and positively profiling youth in the community.
How do youth apply to join the YEC? The Town is not currently accepting applications at this time.
