Old Harwood Traffic Calming

On March 3, 2008, Ajax Council approved a Traffic Calming Initiative for Old Harwood Avenue from Chapman Drive to Fishlock Street, and along Fishlock Street from Old Harwood Avenue to Lax Avenue for 2008.

News Release: Council approves traffic calming on Old Harwood Avenue

Town staff presented a few traffic calming alternatives for Old Harwood Avenue at a Public Open House on April 24, 2008.

For the South Section, from Chapman Drive to Magill Drive, the preferred option presented at the Open House forms the Final Traffic Calming Plan. The following traffic calming features are included in the plan:

  • A curb extension on the east side, south of Hirshfield Lane (forming a chicane).
  • A curb extension on the west side, north of Hirshfield Lane (forming a chicane).
  • A delineated parking bay on the west side, north of Hirshfield Lane.
  • A curb extension on the west side, north of Bathham Lane.
  • Pavement markings delineating the travel lanes.

For the North Section, from Magill Drive to Fishlock Street, and Fishlock from Old Harwood to Lax Avenue, the preferred plan has been updated to include an additional speed table on Fishlock:

  • A curb extension on the east side, north of Grayson Road (forming a chicane).
  • A curb extension on the west side, north of Parkins Drive (forming a chicane).
  • A raised speed table, north of Parkins Drive.
  • A curb extension on the east side, north of Top Street (forming a chicane).
  • A curb extension on the west side, south of Wiggins Drive (forming a chicane).
  • A raised speed table, north of Bray Drive (tied to the trail network).
  • A raised speed table, on Fishlock Street, west of Lax Avenue.

Approval from the residents fronting the study area is required before Town staff can present the Final Traffic Calming Plan to Council. A 50 per cent response rate with 60 per cent support is required, to proceed with this project. If this support and approval is obtained, implementation of traffic calming measures is anticipated by the Fall of 2008. Your response is required by May 21, 2008.
