Recreation, Arts and Culture Advisory Committee

The Recreation, Arts and Culture Advisory Committee serves to strengthen recreation service opportunities for all residents. Recreation Services is described in a broad sense that encompasses sport, arts & culture, general leisure programs and services.

Recreation, Arts and Culture Advisory Committee Minutes

Mandate

  • To support and assist with the goals, objectives and strategic directions, as outlined in current and proposed Recreation Services planning documents, with a specific focus on the Parks, Recreation and Culture Master Plan and the Integrated Community Arts and Cultural Plan (ICACP).
  • To serve as a liaison and advise Council on matters pertaining to the effective and efficient delivery of recreation services, facilities, programs, and special events.
  • To act as a link to Recreation Services and the community through various consultative processes in order to improve and encourage full use of recreation and arts resources available in Ajax.
  • Identify recreation and arts issues and advise on how to address the diverse needs of the Ajax community.

The Advisory Committee will review information pertinent to this mandate and discuss alternative courses of action as required, which will include recommendations to Council on policies, programs and regulations as appropriate. The Advisory Committee may provide, from time to time, input and support to broader corporate initiatives that advance the interests of the Town as identified in the corporate strategic plan.

Committee Members

  • Up to two Council member(s)
  • Up to nine citizens, (membership will be divided in order to strive for a balance between sport/recreation, arts and culture representation)
  • Support staff: Committee Coordinator (LIS), Recreation & Culture Staff (REC), other staff as circumstances require

Frequency of Meetings

  •  Monthly, except July and August (up to 10 per year)

Specific Roles:

  • Consulting with residents and/or targeted stakeholders on various issues or future development opportunities.
  • Reviewing draft policies that will support the effective and efficient delivery of programs and services.
  • Providing advice and guidance on annual department projects and initiatives.
  • Providing input on the development and/or implementation of programs, services and events that support increased community participation.
  • Establishing and/or strengthening effective community partnerships, where applicable.
  • Providing input on various marketing and communication strategies that profile Recreation & Culture.

  • Advise on Physical Activity Strategy
  • Input on the Parks, Recreation & Culture Space Master Plan study and process
  • Host Community Consultation meetings with stakeholders including possible workshops
  • Contact with Ice and Field user groups
  • Input on various arts related activities
  • Volunteer Recognition Program
  • Community Affiliation Status
