Accessibility Advisory Committee

The Town of Ajax is committed to improving access to its citizens, through the requirements and in the spirit of the Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2001 and the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005. The Town of Ajax Accessibility Advisory Committee, required by legislation, advises Council on specific initiatives to be taken by the Town to reduce barriers experienced by persons with disabilities.

Mandate

  1. Provide advice to Council on the annual Town of Ajax Accessibility Plan,.
  2. Provide advice and counsel on site plans of new and existing municipal buildings, significant renovations on Town facilities, accessibility to Town facilities in general.
  3. Provide guidance on customer feedback regarding accessibility.
  4. Monitor the development of the legislative requirements of the Act and offer advice on the Town’s compliance with the regulations.

The Advisory Committee will review information pertinent to this mandate and discuss alternative courses of action as required, which will include recommendations to Council on policies, programs and regulations as appropriate. The Advisory Committee may provide, from time to time, input and support to broader corporate initiatives that advance the interests of the Town as identified in the corporate strategic plan

Committee Composition

  • Up to two Council member(s)
  • Up to nine citizens,
  • Support staff : Committee Coordinator/Accessibility Plan Administrator (LIS)

Frequency of Meetings

  • Monthly, up to 10 per year

Specific Roles

  • Providing input on the annual accessibility plan, including the incorporation of the AODA Customer Service Standards into the Customer Service Strategy.
  • Providing advice on the identification of barriers for the annual Accessibility Plan.
  • Reviewing the semi-annual status report on the Accessibility Plan.
  • Providing input on customer complaints on accessibility issues.
  • Providing advice and guidance on new and renovated Town facilities with regard to accessibility by reviewing drawings and plans with appropriate staff.
