Fire Extinguishers

A fire extinguisher can help control many types of fires while you are waiting for the Fire Department to arrive. You can buy them where you buy smoke and CO detectors. Read the instructions that come with your extinguisher. Everyone in the house should know how to use the extinguisher

Always remember: Always call 9-1-1 before you try to put out a fire yourself! Image

Tips on fire extinguishers:

There are two types of fire extinguishers:

  • Use multi-purpose (A/B/C type) for all types of fires such as paper, wood, grease and electrical fires
  • You can use a B/C type fire extinguishers to fight grease and electrical fires.

Have an extinguisher on each level of your home.  Keep one in the kitchen, not too close to the stove.  Don’t forget the garage, workshop, basement, camper, boat and vacation home.

Check them monthly to be sure each unit is holding its charge, and have them serviced annually by a qualified contractor.
