Carbon Monoxide (CO) Detectors

Carbon monoxide detectors are should be installed near the sleeping areas. Choose a detector approved by a group such as Underwriters Laboratories of Canada (ULC).  Carbon monoxide detectors can be bought at home supply stores or anywhere else you buy smoke alarms. Follow the instructions that come with the detector.

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colourless, odourless, deadly gas. Because you can’t see, taste or smell it, carbon monoxide can kill you before you know it’s there. It can cause dizziness, headaches, vomiting, watering eyes, and eventually weakness and death by suffocation.

Here are some steps you can take to protect your family from carbon monoxide: Image

  • Have your furnace and heating system inspected once a year by a heating specialist.
  • Have your chimney and flue cleaned professionally.
  • Make sure burner flames on furnaces and stoves are blue - not yellow-orange.
  • Never run a car or any gasoline engine in an enclosed space.
  • Never use a barbeque in an enclosed area such as in your house or garage.
