Traffic Watch and Road WatchThe Town of Ajax has partnerships with the City of Pickering and Durham Regional Police to help residents address speeding and aggressive driving. The Neighbourhood Traffic Watch and the Road Watch programs get residents involved in reporting traffic problems.
Neighbourhood Traffic Watch Neighbourhood Traffic Watch is an driver awareness and education program. Residents use a roadside radar unit to alert drivers of their actual speed compared to the legal posted speed. The program tracks violations for police followup. The program is non-confrontational, with participants only recording information that is passed onto town staff and then to police. The Neighbourhood Traffic Watch program can be brought into most communities upon request. There must be at least two community members willing to volunteer their time and operate the equipment. Here's how it works:
- Participants complete the necessary program forms.
- Staff conduct a traffic study to determine roadway conditions.
- Equipment is loaned to volunteers.
- Volunteers operate the radar display equipment at their convenience.
- Volunteers record licence plates of speeders.
- The information and equipment is returned to staff.
- Durham Region Police send out advisory notices (not tickets) to speeders.
- Police follow up with a one day “zero tolerance” enforcement campaign.
- Town staff do a follow-up study to see if there is any change, and recommend further action if needed.
Road Watch Road Watch programs are used in all municipalities in Durham. In this program, residents report traffic incidents and violations to police for follow up. A committee of volunteer residents, town staff, members of Council and police coordinate the program. Here's how it works:
- To report any incidences of unsafe driving, fill in the Road Watch - Online Citizen Report Form or fill in the Road Watch printable Citizen Report Form. Traffic violation notice forms and drop boxes for the forms are provided at Town offices and participating businesses (such as local convenience and major grocery food stores).
- Anyone who sees a traffic incident can record the details on the Road Watch Forms and drop them off for the committee. The forms ask for the name of the person reporting, but this information is kept confidential - no one finds out the names.
- The forms are picked up by Committee members, all of whom have been adminstered the police Oath of Secrecy.
- The information is followed-up by Durham Regional Police.
