Pickering Village Land Use Planning and Urban Design StudyPickering Village is a unique and vibrant part of the Town of Ajax, with a distinct heritage character and a wealth of heritage resources, including unique buildings and sites. To ensure its importance to the community is protected, Ajax Town Council has enacted an interim control bylaw to undertake a comprehensive planning review prior to any new development taking place. The bylaw is being implemented to ensure that future applications for development in the area benefit from a consistent set of principles that address the needs of the entire community. The bylaw also gives the Town the time required to determine the scope of the study and conduct a thorough review. While the bylaw is in effect, only renovations to the interior of buildings for existing uses on the premises, the erection of accessory structures (excluding garages) or decks, landscaping, or repaving of existing hard surfaces will be permitted, subject to regular requirements (e.g. a Building Permit). In consultation with key stakeholders (including Heritage Ajax and the Pickering Village Business Improvement Area), area businesses, and residents, the Town will review Official Plan policies and zoning regulations for the Village and develop a long-term vision for the area. Once a comprehensive vision is established, urban design and architectural standards consistent with the vision will be developed. All of the planning and design considerations for the Village will be undertaken with full public consultation that is transparent and gives local residents and businesses opportunity for meaningful input.
