Federal Taxes A Business Number is a federal numbering system used for identification purposes by the Canada Revenue Agency. Not all businesses require a number and Canada Revenue Agency account. A business needs a number if it requires one of the following accounts:
GST/HST

Import/Export
Other (e.g. Charity, Excise Tax, etc.)

Employer Payroll All businesses are required to make payroll deductions from their employees for Income Tax, Canada Pension Plan and Employment Insurance. The Canada Revenue Agency offers information on their website about How Payroll Works or you can call 1-800-959-5525.

Workplace Safety and Insurance Board The Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) oversees Ontario's workplace safety education and training system, provides disability benefits, monitors the quality of health care and assists in early and safe return to work. Most businesses in Ontario that employ workers (including family and sub-contractors) must register and make remittance to the WSIB.
