Heritage Advisory Committee

The Town of Ajax has a unique history and architectural heritage. The promotion and preservation of the local history, including the natural, cultural and architectural heritage serves the community in understanding its beginnings, development and future.

Mandate

  1. The promotion of the heritage and history of the Town of Ajax.
  2. The preservation of historical information, artifacts, historical sites and architecture.
  3. Examining and commenting on Town policies that have a broad public interest.
  4. Commenting on selected planning applications that may have an impact on heritage properties.
  5. Public outreach and education regarding heritage issues.
  6. In addition, the committee will serve as the Local Architectural Conservation Advisory Committee in accordance with the Ontario Heritage Act.

The Advisory Committee will review information pertinent to this mandate and discuss alternative courses of action as required, which will include recommendations to Council on policies, programs and regulations as appropriate. The Advisory Committee may provide, from time to time, input and support to broader corporate initiatives that advance the interests of the Town as identified in the corporate strategic plan.

Committee Composition

  • Up to two Council member(s)
  • Up to nine citizens
  • Support staff : Committee Coordinator (LIS), Records Manager (LIS), Senior Planner (P&D)

Frequency of Meetings

  •  Monthly, except July and August (up to 10 per year)

Specific Roles

  • Providing advice and guidance on historical, archival and heritage projects including the Pickering Village Study.
  • Reviewing and providing advice on heritage impacts as directed by Town staff.
  • Presenting the annual "Pat Sheehan " Awards at the Ajax High School commencement ceremonies.
  • Recommending the designation of appropriate heritage buildings.
  • Undertaking the promotion of Town history and archives through displays and outreach programs.
